We once had heroes:
Men and women, of prime, pristine values,
Who journeyed lofty mountains, deep valleys,
Fought demons, fought wicked kingdoms,
In search, of a land of hope and freedom.
We once had heroes:
Men and women, who their task done to the best,
Stretched out their legs, in well-deserved rest,
From the precarious quest, their lengthy toil,
Proud of their land, of honey and gushing oil.
We once had heroes:
Who now watch aghast, in eternal alarm,
Their hard-won prize, once a fertile farm,
Become wasteland, of weed and brambles,
A playground, for thieves, who live to gamble.
We once had heroes
